Hi. My name is Keith, I am Irish. I am 48 years of age and I reside in Barcelona, Spain.
One day in February of 2014 in Brazil, while simply cycling back to my apartment, I got a very strange pain going across the back of my shoulders. Ten days later, I was sitting in front of a cardiologist with a bundle of tests I’d gotten done. He found one he seemed to be more interested in. He opened it, closed it, set it down on the table and said it might be a good idea to go into hospital asap.
The next day I had an angiogram and they found 4 blocked arteries, one of them was 95% blocked, this was the problematic one. I was in shock. “How could I have cardiovascular disease? I am 43 years of age!”. As far as I was concerned my diet was good. I ate a lot of vegetables, and fish and very little red meat. I had given up eating white bread, white rice, white pasta a long time ago. I exercised 5 days a week. I was in good shape. Or so I thought. By the middle of March, they had put 3 stents in.
I returned to fitness training but one of my instructors suggested going to see a Nutritionist about my diet and not a doctor, which I had never done before. This was without a doubt the best decision I had ever made related to my personal health. I always knew that diet was important, but I was really under the impression that as long as you also did lots of exercise, you were going to be ok.
I was very wrong, I wanted to know why and this was the start of my journey into Nutrition & Health.
